Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A | DC-DC charger and voltage regulator

No rating yet

Product description

The Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC charger is a professional DC to DC converter/charger with an adaptive 3-stage charging algorithm and built-in Bluetooth connectivity. The device is intended for use in vehicles and boats with dual battery systems with a starter battery and a service battery, where the (smart) alternator and the start battery charge the service battery. The Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC charger can be configured and monitored via Bluetooth, and it can be switched on and off remotely via a switch or its built-in engine running detection mechanism. This model can be used in 12 V systems and it is suitable for both lead acid and lithium batteries. Multiple units can be connected in parallel to increase output power.

Additional specifications and description

Overview and features

The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A is an efficient, professional battery charger and voltage regulator.

The device features Victron’s adaptive three-stage (bulk, absorption and float) charging algorithm.

The charger adapts to battery usage patterns to adjust the length of the adsorption stage to prevent under- or overcharging.

Thanks to the built-in Bluetooth connectivity users can connect with a compatible smartphone/tablet/computer via the VictronConnect app.

The app gives a convenient overview of the system status as well as the option to configure all charging parameters.

Application

The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A addresses the requirements of portable power supply systems for vehicles such as caravans, campervans, boats etc.

In these applications, power to electrical appliances is provided by a so-called service battery (or battery bank), rather than the vehicle’s starter battery.

The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A is designed to provide ideal charging for service batteries in vehicles.

The charger is compatible with most battery types, including lead-acid, AGM, Gel and LiFePO₄.

Alternatively, the Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A can function as a DC power supply with a built-in voltage regulator, working in a wide range of input voltage, while maintaining a steady output voltage.

Why do portable power supply systems require a dedicated DC-DC charger?

This service battery is charged by the engine alternator and the starter battery.

The problem comes when trying to charge the service battery in a vehicle with a smart alternator.

Smart alternators will change and reduce their output voltage, making them unsuitable for service battery charging.

Another problem present in boats and other large vehicles is the voltage drop caused by the sheer length of the DC cables going to the service battery.

The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A addresses these issues by providing a regulated output, maintaining an optimal voltage for every stage of the charging process.

Design and construction

The Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A is engineered to provide years of trouble-free and dependable operation in all usage conditions. The device can operate in high temperatures up to 55 °C, outputting at maximum power at temperatures up to 40 °C. The charger is passively cooled with a radiator at the back, which makes it practically silent.

The Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A features multiple built-in protections that ensure safe operation, including overheating protection and short circuit protection.

Please note, that Li-ion batteries should not be charged if the battery temperature drops below 0 °C.
