Additional specifications and description

At a glance
The SmartSolar MPPT RS 450|100 is an easy-to-use solar charge controller with an advanced design and rich feature set. It is lightweight, efficient and quiet.
This model features a wide, 80-450 VDC operating solar voltage input, independent tracking inputs, full connectivity, and galvanically isolated PV connections. The device's built-in display screen and fully programmable battery charging parameters make it more user-friendly and versatile.

What is an MPPT Solar Charge Controller?
A solar charge controller, also known as a solar regulator, is a battery charge regulator connected between the solar array and the battery. By continuously tracking the Maximum Power Point, it can extract the most power possible from the solar arrays and use it to charge the battery. The solar output has to be regulated so the battery charges correctly and does not get overcharged.

What is the use case?
The SmartSolar MPPT RS solar charge controllers are designed for use with off-grid and grid-connected systems, with large series connected PV arrays charging 48 V DC battery banks. Thanks to the independent MPPT tracking inputs, it is possible to connect two separate PV strings, outputting at different voltages simultaneously to the same solar charge controller. The SmartSolar MPPT RS is compatible with other Victron products, such as the MultiPlus-II family of inverters and the Cerbo GX control centre.

Efficient
The SmartSolar MPPT RS charge controller is designed from the ground up with efficiency in mind, reaching a conversion efficiency of up to 96%! A quiet fan provides active cooling and ensures optimal working conditions. The SmartSolar MPPT RS 450|100 also features advanced Maximum Power Point detection algorithms that optimise performance in partial shading conditions.
Together these features enable the device to extract as much power as possible from the photovoltaic panels.

Feature packed
The charge controller supports local and remote monitoring and management thanks to an onboard display and Bluetooth functionality. The unit's performance can be further optimised by connecting additional external voltage and temperature sensors. The device even features a programmable relay to trigger other devices.

Design
The Victron SmartSolar MPPT RS 450|100 features a sturdy metal enclosure that guarantees safe operation and protects it from damage. The fully covered electrical connections improve safety. The unit features a wide array of inputs, including VE.Direct and VE.Can ports.
An LCD screen provides an overview of all key system parameters at a glance.

Installation considerations
The device is designed for indoor wall mounting and comes bundled with the necessary mounting bracket and hardware. At least 30 cm of space should be left under and above the unit to allow sufficient ventilation and cooling. The device should not be mounted outside and exposed to temperature extremes or moisture.

Safety precautions
A single solar array should not be connected to both inputs simultaneously.
The safe operation of the device requires the use of cables with a sufficient cross-section and fuses with the appropriate rating, as per the wiring diagram.

Built-in protections
The charge controller has multiple integrated safety features, including overheating protection and battery overvoltage protection. If the environment is too hot and the device is at risk of overheating, the integrated thermal protection will begin limiting the power output. If this proves insufficient to reduce the temperature, the unit will shut down entirely until it cools down. In addition to the operating temperature, the device monitors the battery voltage and will shut down if the voltage is excessive.
